Allergies - Why Use A Natural Remedy

Grass Allergies

Seasonal allergies afflict more than 22 million Americans, with symptoms occurring anywhere from early spring through late November. Allergies are basically cause by the immune system's over reaction to pollens, grass, airborne fungi, insect bites and even some kinds of foods or products you apply to your skin. Our environment is full of chemicals and new ones are created everyday which causes our immune system to be challenged boichemically.

What basically happens when an allergen encounters our body is - our body fights back by producing an excess of inflammatory chemicals, such as histamine. Our body is trying to destroy the allergen and the overabundance of the histamine causes us to have runny noses, watery eyes and sneezing. For some people the allergy symptoms then produce a sinus infection or an ear infection both of which can be extremely painful and debilitating.

Typically doctors prescribe antihistamines for allergies but many people do not like the physical side effects associated with the regular use of antihistamines and decongestants. These medicines tend to make one drowsy and groggy. Most of us do not perform our daily tasks very well when we are in this state; therefore every time we take the medicine our productivity takes a nose dive. Also, many people experience dry mouth which can lead to bad breath. Dehydration is an additional problem for antihistamine takers. Sometimes users get very little relief from prescription allergy medicine and have to keep constantly trying new ones.

If you are tired of the side effects or the no effects from prescription and over the counter antihistamines and decongestants you might consider an herbal remedy. Herbal remedies are normally agents that have the ability to relieve congestion and to loosen the mucus but don't produce unpleasant side effects. Many homeopathic remedies also contain anti-inflammatory agents that soothe irritated mucus membranes.

If you do choose to take a homeopathic remedy make sure to check with your doctor and pharmacist to make sure it will not interact with other medications you are taking.
